Why is the RCCB before my VFD tripping and what can I do about it?

1–2 minutes

VFDs produce a lot of leakage current at high frequencies. It is important to keep leakage current loops small and to use an RCCB that can distinguish residual from leakage current and provides a delay to ignore the current imbalance in the Y capacitors when power switching.

  • Disconnect the PE wire of the motor cable from the terminal strip and connect it directly to the drive to decrease the leakage current loop size
  • If possible, use a shielded motor cable grounded on both ends, where the shield provides a low-impedance return path for high-frequency leakage current
  • Use braids instead of round wires for earthing and grounding
  • Add an EMC filter at the drive input. The Y capacitors in it can provide a short return path for leakage current
  • Use a 300 mA RCCB type B, which has a frequency-dependent characteristic. It has different thresholds for low-frequency residual current and high frequency leakage current in accordance with the human body’s sensitivity to current. It also provides protection against residual DC current that may occur on a VFD as opposed to type A
  • Use an RCCB with delayed action to avoid tripping when the powering the drive up or down
