Easy control of Delta VFD drives

This week we would like to show you two new function blocks (FB) that we have developed to make even easier to use Delta Industrial Automation products.

Usually we need to control several AC drives from a single Master PLC and Modbus communication is a cheap and helpful way to get it.

In order to reduce programming and commissioning time we have developed two FB:

  • COM2_VFDLINK: Configures the communication parameters (baudrate, number of bits, parity,…) that all the nodes on the network have to share and informs about the communication state of each node.
  • DELTA_VFD: Controls each one of the slaves VFD, we can Start/Stop, Forward/Reverse, frequency command and reset faults. On the other side, the FB informs us about the status of the drive, alarm code, output frequency and output current.

Another Delta successful application!

This time, the problem comes because of the big number of drives needed for the application.
Up to 68 Slaves to be controlled by a PLC, and even in Modus the theoretic limit is 128 nodes, the ones who are really in the field should know than more than 32 nodes means big troubles.

According to this, we recommend to our customer to use CANOpen in two different CANOpen Networks of 34 slaves each.

Succesful Application: Electric Concrete Truck

This is a new application for our Netherlands distributor Innomotion.
The idea is to make a concrete truck more economic and silent.

Normally the drum is turned with diesel power (hydraulics) from the truck.
Now the drum is loaded at the factory on electric power (cable) and on the road a small generator is supplying just enough power for slow turning and unloading of the truck.

It will save fuel but most of all were possible the truck can unload on the cable so in the innercities there is less pollution on the building site and less noise.

Inside the big cabinet there is a C2000 45KW delta PLC and HMI.

Successful Aplication: C2000 for Injection Molding Machine

Injection Molding machines is a quite common application, because of that, Delta develop several solution depending on the different type of injection moldign machine.

In frirst place, we develop specific solution for this application called HES
This system provides precise pressure and flow controls, with our Delta key point in power: The energy savings.
In this moments, this product is under field test in Asia, and really soon on the rest of the world!

But for standard systems we got another solution.
Probably many of you already hear about our new C2000 Delta Inverter series, and possibly many of you already work with it in some application.
So this is one of the multiple ways to squeeze the capabilities of this versatile product.

Hybrid System based on C2000

The keypoint in this system is use the internal PLC and the PG card (encoder feedback) of C2000 to create a standalone control system able to adjust itself without any extra controller.

Successful Application: Pitch Driving on Wind Power Generation

Another successful application, in this case from our global service centre in China.
The application consist in move the inclination of the blades of the big power generation windmills, to get the maximum power from the wind.
And at the same time, when the wind is too strong, protect the windmill situating the blades in less friction position against the win direction.

How to control Delta AC drive using Step & Direction

There are three basic ways to control a AC drive:
– Torque control (analog signal, digital signal, embedded potentiometer, communication)
– Speed Control (analog signal, digital signal, embedded potentiometer, communication)
– Position Control (Step&Direction, Comunication)

But because the inverters accuracy (usually) is not very good, the engineers, prefer to use Steppers, or Servosystems.
So the majority of the inverter applications used to be Speed or Torque control.

But the last years, in the industry appears the need to realize good positioning with middle power and reliable cost. Servo drives are still too expensive for middle power and steppers are only for low power applications.

Because of that, the new C2000 surprise us again, with the capability to have accurate positioning using Step & Direction control.
The way to achieve the good accuracy, is because some feedback encoder located on the motor and the EMC-PG01L card, to acquire the feedback and position command at the same time.
